Breddos Tacos
Last week I met up with Chloe for a long overdue catch up, over one of my favourite foods - tacos! When she suggested that we head to Breddos Tacos, near Old Street, I jumped at the chance. I had heard of them before, but had never been to their restaurant or tried their tacos before.Breddos Tacos started life in a car park in Hackney a few years ago, and since then they've gone on to do pop-ups and appear at street food markets all over the capital. Last year they found a permanent location in Clerkenwell, and the restaurant is perfect. It's small and cosy with shared seating, taking their East London street food roots into a more grown up restaurant vibe. The idea behind their tacos brings together the hundreds of roadside taquerias in America and Mexico, with fresh British produce. Every dish is colourful and full of flavour! The menu changes regularly, so I can't promise that the dishes we tried will be available when you visit, but if they're anything to go by, no Breddos Tacos taco will disappoint!Brownie points are awarded for the generous portion of chips and dip that accompany the menu as soon as you sit down! Snacks never go a miss in my eyes.We decided on choosing 2 tacos each and 1 tostada, based on our waitresses recommendation. I would agree that this is a substantial amount to fill you up, but still leave room for dessert! If however, you're looking for just a light snack, perhaps just 2 dishes (either 1 taco and 1 tostada, or 2 tacos) would be sufficient.Chloe chose the Baja Fish taco, with cabbage and lime mayo (pictured above), whilst I opted for a vegetarian Burford Brown Egg (pictured below), served with macadamia nut mole, queso fresco and sesame seeds. We both decided on trying the Pulpo tostada - octopus served with black vinegar, sichuan, bone marrow, potatoes and avocado. Whilst Chloe chose the Carne Asada taco - aged onglet steak with miso, bone marrow butter and grelot onion cream. And I finished with the Cochinita Pibil taco - pork with salsa, black bean and pickled habanero onions. With still a little room in us, we couldn't resist sharing one of Breddos Tacos Churro Ice-cream Sandwiches, which is essentially two giant churros curled up to form the 'bread' with a healthy dollop of hazelnut and chocolate ice-cream in between. Amazing!Breddos Tacos: 4/5
- Small but perfectly formed menu
- Great flavours
- Great atmosphere
- Perfect place to catch up with friends
- Only criticism is that some of the flavours were quite powerful, and I began to feel a little overwhelmed by the end of it - but that could be because I chose a bad mixture!
