Cay Tre, Vietnamese in Soho
A few weeks ago now, I grabbed a quick dinner with Chloe before we headed to watch Beautiful, The Carole King Musical, at Cay Tre in Soho. Located on the busy and bustling Dean Street, Cay Tre has been on my forever growing list of places to eat in London. So I was pleased that we managed to grab a spot on a Friday night, not having thought ahead to book. The restaurant was heaving with customers and the queue was out of the door, but as we were in a rush we were happy to take the boxed in window seat so managed to skip ahead. This actually worked out perfectly for social media snaps – such great lighting sat by the window, ha!
Drinks was an easy call – we both opted for the Vijito. No not a virgin mojito as I assumed but Cay Tre’s very own take on this classic cocktail using passionfruit. These were absolutely delicious and had the effect of looking like a traffic light – yellow, green and red. So colourful!
Equally as colourful were the two main dishes we chose. I picked out their Tui Bowl which comprised of minced pork, Thai basil, yellow bean sauce, Pho noodle and was served in a deep bowl and garnished with fresh mint and peanuts. It had a slight kick to it, but was more sweet than spicy. The flavours fused together perfectly, and although I’m not normally a fan of eating raw mint, it was really delicious. Priced at just £9.50 it was plenty of food without any starters or sides.
Chloe chose the Vietnamese Stir-Fried Noodle with Seafood. This included Ecuador prawns, squid, kaichoy greens and water celery, stir fried with their ramen noodles. This looked and smelled equally as satisfying at mine but was priced slightly higher, but still very reasonable, at £12.
Now that I’m writing this post up and double checking their menu, I realise that we ate from their ‘pre-prandials’ menu which is only available between 4-6pm Monday to Friday or 12-6pm at weekends. So that’s worth taking into account. Otherwise their a la carte menu consists of a variety of soups, small plates, wraps and rolls, meat, curry and fish. The menu doesn’t look to be any more expensive but you probably would need to order a side with your main.
